Datafari: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Datafari is an open source enterprise search engine that France Labs describes as an insight engine. It crawls, indexes and searches content from many sources through connectors, and supports BM25 keyword, vector and hybrid search. Results are filtered so users see only documents they are authorised to access, transmissions run over HTTPS and single sign-on is supported. Recent versions add an AI assistant with generative AI modules that can connect to Mistral, OpenAI or local LLMs. Datafari is built on Apache Solr and the Apache ManifoldCF connector framework, and is designed for clustered, distributed deployments.

Datafari is maintained by France Labs in Cagnes-sur-Mer, France. The community edition is released under the Apache 2.0 licence, with the source code on GitHub; the enterprise edition is proprietary, and France Labs offers support. Datafari is self-hosted, with Docker the simplest installation route, so the organisation decides where data and indexes live and no data needs to leave its own infrastructure. The optional generative AI modules can use a local LLM, which keeps that part under the organisation's control as well.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Datafari

Datafari is headquartered in FR and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Datafari hosts data outside the EU (self-host). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Datafari is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Datafari together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
