DBOS: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

DBOS is an open-source library, DBOS Transact, for durable workflows and queues in applications and AI agents. It stores workflow state in a Postgres database that the application already uses, so a program can resume after a failure without a separate orchestration service. The library is released under the MIT licence. The vendor also offers DBOS Cloud and the DBOS Conductor control plane, and Conductor can be self-hosted on-premises or in any cloud.

DBOS, Inc. is a US company. Because the library is MIT-licensed and needs only Postgres, a European organisation can run it entirely on its own infrastructure and keep workflow data under its own control. The regions of DBOS Cloud are not stated on the vendor's pages, so European users of the hosted service should confirm data location and data processing terms in the contract. A US company may be subject to US legal demands regardless of where data is stored.

Why digital sovereignty matters with DBOS

DBOS is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

DBOS hosts data outside the EU (US). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

DBOS is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs DBOS together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
