Dino is an open-source chat client for the desktop that uses the XMPP (Jabber) protocol. It is written in Vala with GTK and, since version 0.4, is built on GTK4 and libadwaita. Packages are available in many Linux distribution repositories. Dino supports group chats, message replies and reactions, file transfers, and peer-to-peer audio and video calls that are end-to-end encrypted and work with other XMPP apps. Messages can be end-to-end encrypted with OMEMO or OpenPGP. Read and typing notifications can be switched off globally or per contact.
Dino is released under the GPL-3.0 licence and is developed by the Dino Team and an open community on GitHub, with development supported by donations. Dino is a client only: messages are stored on the XMPP server the user chooses, so the hosting location and operator are decided by the chosen provider or by an organisation running its own server. For European organisations this fits a self-managed setup built on an open standard, where the choice of server, and therefore of jurisdiction, stays with the user.
