Delta Chat is a free, open-source messenger for mobile and desktop that uses email-style relays instead of a central service. Apps exist for Android, iOS, desktop and Ubuntu Touch. Contacts are added by QR code or invite link, with no public discovery and no phone number needed. Messages are end-to-end encrypted by default, using a secure subset of OpenPGP with the Autocrypt and Secure-Join protocols. Profiles, groups and contacts exist only on the user's devices.
Delta Chat relies on chatmail relays, email-style servers that only forward messages and hold them temporarily while a recipient is offline. These relays are run by various groups, not by the Delta Chat developers, and users can add or remove them, so the hosting location depends on the relay chosen. The German company merlinux GmbH in Freiburg lists Delta Chat among its key project involvements. According to the project, forward secrecy and post-quantum cryptography are not yet supported.
