kChat is the team chat of Infomaniak's kSuite collaboration suite. It offers public and private channels, messaging and file sharing, audio and video calls with one person, a group or a whole channel, @mentions, saved messages, search for conversations and files, and customisable notifications. kChat is available through apps and is only usable with a kSuite subscription and an Infomaniak account.
Infomaniak is headquartered in Switzerland. Switzerland is not an EU member but belongs to EFTA. According to Infomaniak's documentation, kChat data is hosted in Switzerland, in data centres that Infomaniak develops and manages exclusively itself, and is encrypted at rest and in transit, including automatic backups. The App Store listing says Infomaniak operates independently of large technology companies and controls its infrastructure end to end. For a European organisation, this means a vendor-hosted service under Swiss jurisdiction rather than EU jurisdiction; organisations should check whether this meets their legal and contractual requirements for data location.
