Docker Desktop is Docker's application for building, running and managing containers on a developer's own computer. It bundles Docker Engine, the Docker CLI, Docker Compose, Docker Build and a built-in local Kubernetes option, plus tools for volume management, file synchronisation and debugging. It is available for macOS, Windows and Linux and runs locally on the user's machine. Extensions connect third-party tools, and the business tiers add hardened settings, registry and image access controls and virtual desktop support.
Docker, Inc. is headquartered in Palo Alto, California, and is a US company, so it is subject to US law. Docker Desktop is distributed under the Docker Subscription Service Agreement rather than as open source: it is free for personal use, education, non-commercial open-source projects and small businesses below defined thresholds, and larger organisations need a paid subscription. The underlying Docker Engine and Moby projects remain open source and can be used without Docker Desktop.
