Ente: sovereignty score and 7 European alternatives

Ente is a platform of end-to-end encrypted apps. Its best-known part, Ente Photos, backs up and stores photos and videos, with apps for Android, iOS, web and desktop. Ente Auth and Ente Locker are also available. According to Ente, files, metadata and derived data such as face recognition are encrypted and decrypted only on the devices of the user and of the people they share with. Ente offers shared albums and family plans. The apps are open source (AGPL-3.0) and the server can be self-hosted.

Ente Technologies, Inc. is based in the United States (Dover, Delaware). According to its privacy policy, its servers or hosting partners are located in Europe; it names Scaleway and Hetzner (compute and storage) and Backblaze and Wasabi (storage). The policy also states that data may be transferred to the United States or other countries outside Europe. A US parent company is a CLOUD Act signal, while the encryption limits what the provider itself can read. Organisations that want full control can self-host.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Ente

Ente is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Ente scores best on data residency.

Ente is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Ente together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
