Fluentd is an open source data collector that serves as a unified logging layer between data sources and backend systems. It collects, filters, buffers and routes logs and other events, and has more than five hundred plugins for input and output. It is released under the Apache 2 licence and is a project graduated by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF). You install and operate it yourself on your own servers or in your own container environments.
The CNCF is part of the Linux Foundation, a non-profit organisation in the United States, and is therefore subject to US law. Fluentd has no cloud service of its own: the software runs entirely on your infrastructure, so log data leaves your environment only through the destinations you configure yourself. The source code is public and maintained by many contributors from different organisations, which limits dependence on a single vendor. For European organisations it is a usable building block for log management within their own EU hosting.
