Icinga: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Icinga is a monitoring system for IT infrastructure. It checks the availability and performance of hosts, services, networks and applications, including cloud systems, containers and Kubernetes, and alerts teams when something fails. The core, Icinga 2, is written in C++ and supports distributed, high-availability setups and Nagios-compatible check plugins. Icinga Web provides dashboards, Icinga Director supports configuration and automation, and data is collected through agents or agentless protocols such as SNMP, SSH and WMI. Metrics can be exported via OpenTelemetry.

Icinga is developed by Icinga GmbH in Nuremberg, Germany, and began in 2009 as a fork of Nagios. The software is open source and free to use without host or service limits; optional paid subscriptions cover enterprise repositories, modules and support. Because Icinga can be installed on servers you control, monitoring data can stay entirely within your own infrastructure. NETWAYS also offers managed Icinga hosting through NETWAYS Web Services for organisations that prefer not to operate it themselves.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Icinga

Icinga is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Icinga scores best on data residency.

Icinga is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Icinga together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
