Gancio: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Gancio is a shared event agenda for local communities. Each installation forms a small node for a territory or a thematic group, where events are published and found. Agendas can be exported through RSS, iCal, ActivityPub, embeds and microdata, so events also show up in other calendars and across the fediverse. The emphasis is on content rather than personal profiles. Gancio is server software that you install yourself; there is no central service where all agendas come together.

The project is a community initiative with no legal entity named. According to the project site it was born in Italy, within hacker movements; where the team is based today is not stated. The source code is published under the AGPL-3.0 on Framagit. Whoever hosts Gancio decides where the data resides. Development is co-funded through NLnet within the EU's NGI Zero programme. The site lists a stable 1.28 release and a version 2 in beta, whose newest beta release dates from October 2026.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Gancio

Gancio is headquartered in EU and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Gancio scores best on data residency.

Gancio is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Gancio together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
