Google Cloud Firestore is a serverless NoSQL document database for mobile, web and server applications. Data is stored in documents within collections, with nested objects, filterable queries, listeners that push changes to clients in real time, offline support, strong consistency and ACID transactions. The Enterprise edition offers a MongoDB-compatible API. Firestore is delivered only as a managed cloud service, with SDKs for Apple, Android, web, Node.js, Java, Python and Go, among others.
Firestore is a Google product, and Google is a US company. When creating a database you choose a regional or multi-region location. European options include the multi-region eur3 (Belgium and the Netherlands, with a witness replica in Finland) and regions such as Frankfurt, Paris, Milan and Warsaw; London and Zurich are also available. Google describes in its Cloud Data Processing Addendum that it acts as a processor under the GDPR. Because the provider is a US company, US law continues to apply even when data is stored in Europe. This matters for sensitive data and for decisions about encryption keys and data residency.
