GRR: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

GRR (Gestion et Réservation de Ressources) is an open-source web application for booking shared resources such as meeting rooms, vehicles, equipment or staff. Organisations install the PHP application with a MySQL database on their own server, and staff make reservations through a responsive web interface. GRR is an adaptation of the MRBS project. According to the README, the 4.5.x series is currently supported and PHP 8.1 to 8.5 is required.

GRR is maintained by DEVOME, a French business in Saint-Augustin in the Hauts-de-France region, which took over the project in 2014. The source code is on GitHub under the GPL-2.0, marked Copyright Team DEVOME. Besides the free program, DEVOME sells a cloud subscription, MyGRR, and an iCal export module in its online shop; the hosting location of the cloud offer is not published. If you run GRR yourself, the calendar and user data stay on your own infrastructure.

Why digital sovereignty matters with GRR

GRR is headquartered in FR and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so GRR scores best on data residency.

GRR is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs GRR together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
