gVisor: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

gVisor is an open-source application kernel for containers, written in Go. It sits between a containerised application and the host operating system, intercepting system calls so that the application does not reach the host kernel directly. It works with Docker, Kubernetes and containerd, and is installed and operated by the user on their own infrastructure.

The software is developed by Google under the Apache-2.0 licence. Google is headquartered in Mountain View, California, and is a subsidiary of the US holding company Alphabet Inc. Because gVisor runs inside the user's own environment, it does not by itself send data to a vendor. The project does not publish a GDPR or data processing commitment of its own. The main consideration for a European organisation is the US origin of the code's maintenance, which is why the source code is worth reviewing and building independently, so that control stays with the operator.

Why digital sovereignty matters with gVisor

gVisor is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

gVisor hosts data outside the EU (US). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

gVisor is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs gVisor together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
