Helicon Focus: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Helicon Focus is focus stacking software: it combines several photos taken at different focus distances into one fully focused image with greater depth of field. It is used for macro, micro, close-up, jewellery and product photography, among others, and also suits landscapes and still life. The Pro edition adds a RAW-in-DNG-out mode, and plug-ins exist for Lightroom Classic and Capture One. Helicon Focus is proprietary software for Windows and macOS, which you download and buy through the vendor's online store. It is not open source.

The vendor is Helicon Soft Ltd, located in Kharkiv, Ukraine. Ukraine lies outside the EU and the EEA; there is no EU parent company, and no US one either. The pages consulted do not state what data the software or the website processes, or where. Because it is an installable program, you can use it without photos having to go to a cloud service; before using the vendor's online services, check its privacy terms.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Helicon Focus

Helicon Focus is headquartered in UA, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Helicon Focus hosts data outside the EU (OTHER). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Helicon Focus is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Helicon Focus together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
