iCloud Mail is Apple's email service for personal use, tied to an Apple Account. Users get a free @icloud.com address with push mail, webmail on iCloud.com and synchronisation across Apple devices; third-party clients can connect through IMAP. Up to nine additional aliases are possible. The paid iCloud+ tier adds Hide My Email, which creates random forwarding addresses, and the option to use a custom domain name. The service is delivered as SaaS and is not open source.
Apple Inc. is headquartered in the United States, so US jurisdiction, including the CLOUD Act, is relevant for a European organisation. iCloud Mail is not end-to-end encrypted: Apple explains that this is because of the need to interoperate with the global email system. Mail is encrypted in transit and on the server, and Apple holds the keys; even with Advanced Data Protection, Mail, Contacts and Calendars remain under Apple-held keys. Apple states that Apple and third-party data centres may store and process data. Optional S/MIME is supported in Apple's native mail clients.
