Kona: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Kona is a network security automation platform from Nordfold GmbH in Zurich, Switzerland. Security and network teams use it to connect firewalls, proxies, ITSM, SIEM, identity providers and cloud systems through one integration layer, and to build their own automations, reports, web interfaces and REST APIs on top, in any programming language. The platform adds single sign-on, role-based access control, multi-tenancy, rate limiting and audit trails to everything that runs on it. According to the vendor, it is not a firewall policy manager or a SOAR product but a runtime platform that works alongside them.

Nordfold describes itself as an independent, self-funded Swiss company, and no foreign parent is named. Kona is self-hosted on the customer's infrastructure, and the vendor says air-gapped deployments are supported. The data location is therefore the one you choose, not a vendor cloud. Switzerland is not an EU member but an EFTA country with an EU adequacy decision for data protection. For European organisations this suits regulated environments that want to keep security tooling and credentials under their own control.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Kona

Kona is headquartered in Switzerland and falls under Swiss law, including the revised Swiss data protection act. Switzerland is not an EU member, but the European Commission recognises its level of data protection as adequate. Its Swiss headquarters does not by itself bring it under US legislation such as the CLOUD Act.

Kona runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

Kona is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Kona together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
