ManageEngine OpManager: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

ManageEngine OpManager is network monitoring software that provides visibility into the performance and availability of routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, wireless controllers, physical and virtual servers (including VMware, Hyper-V and Nutanix), storage devices and WAN links, with drill-down tools to find root causes. Remote probes report from distributed sites to a central server, and mobile apps are available. OpManager is installed by the customer on Windows or Linux with a bundled PostgreSQL database, and installation guides exist for AWS and Azure. It is proprietary software, not open source.

ManageEngine is the IT management division of Zoho Corporation, a privately held company headquartered in Chennai, India, with a US headquarters in Texas. The headquarters is therefore outside the EU and EEA. Because OpManager is installed on infrastructure the organisation chooses, monitoring data can remain in the EU, but support and updates come from a non-European vendor.

Why digital sovereignty matters with ManageEngine OpManager

ManageEngine OpManager is headquartered in IN, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

ManageEngine OpManager runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

ManageEngine OpManager is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs ManageEngine OpManager together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
