MicroK8s is a lightweight Kubernetes distribution maintained by Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu. It packages core Kubernetes functionality in a compact form and scales from a single node to a highly available cluster. Developers use it on workstations, at the edge and in production. It installs through snap on Linux, with installers for Windows and macOS, and optional services such as the dashboard, DNS and a registry can be enabled with a single command.
MicroK8s is open source under the Apache-2.0 licence and runs entirely on your own machines or in a cloud of your choice. Canonical does not offer a hosted service for it, so there is no vendor cloud where your cluster data ends up. Canonical is based in the United Kingdom, outside the EU. For European organisations this means you decide where workloads and data reside. The documentation mentions no telemetry from the software itself; Canonical's privacy notice refers to its website.
