Munin is a networked resource monitoring tool that helps administrators follow resource trends and find the cause of performance problems. It uses a master/node architecture: the master connects to all nodes at regular intervals, requests their data, stores it in RRD files and updates the graphs, which are drawn with RRDtool. Plugins are small standalone executables that can be written in any language, with a large library available. The framework itself is written in Perl, and a default installation produces many graphs with little setup.
Munin is open source, distributed under the GNU GPL version 2 and developed in the open in the munin-monitoring GitHub organisation. Its copyright is held by its various authors. Munin is not a hosted service: you install the master and nodes on your own infrastructure, so monitoring data stays wherever you run them and no vendor handles it. For European organisations that want full control, there is no supplier jurisdiction to consider, although support comes from the community rather than from a commercial provider.
