NetBox is an open-source platform for documenting and modelling network infrastructure, covering areas such as IP address management (IPAM) and data-centre infrastructure management (DCIM). Its developers describe it as a source of truth for network automation, which automation tools can draw on. The project was started around 2016 by Jeremy Stretch. The commercial company NetBox Labs, based in New York, continues development, offers paid editions and runs the hosted NetBox Cloud service.
The core NetBox code is released under the Apache 2.0 licence and can be run on an organisation's own servers or in its own cloud environment. NetBox Labs is headquartered in the United States and is therefore subject to US jurisdiction. The location of customer data on NetBox Cloud is not stated on the pages reviewed and should be asked about before use. For a European organisation, self-hosting the open-source core keeps the data within its own infrastructure; for a hosted option, the hosting location and contractual terms need to be reviewed.
