Oh Dear: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Oh Dear is a website monitoring service. It checks uptime from multiple locations, monitors SSL certificates and domains, detects broken links and mixed content, supervises cron jobs, and runs performance and Lighthouse-based SEO checks. It also includes a port scanner, branded status pages and automated client reports. Alerts are delivered by email, Slack, Microsoft Teams, PagerDuty, Opsgenie or webhook. Oh Dear is delivered as SaaS.

Oh Dear started in 2018 and is built and maintained by Freek Van der Herten and Mattias Geniar. According to its security page, primary hosting is with Combell in Belgium. Performance metrics are stored in ClickHouse Cloud, Cloudflare provides CDN and protection, and monitoring nodes run on AWS, DigitalOcean and Vultr; locations are not stated for these providers. Oh Dear offers a GDPR data processing agreement with EU standard contractual clauses and publishes a list of subprocessors. The service is not described as open source. European organisations should review the subprocessor list, because several of the named providers do not state their locations.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Oh Dear

Oh Dear is headquartered in BE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Oh Dear scores best on data residency.

Oh Dear is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Oh Dear together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
