Piktochart: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Piktochart is a visual design platform for creating infographics, documents, presentations, social media graphics and videos, with supporting AI tools. It runs as a web application in the browser and is delivered as software as a service. The audience is broad, from education to communications and marketing teams.

The website is operated by Piktochart LLC, a Delaware limited liability company. The team is reported to be based in Penang, Malaysia; the company does not state its own premises address. Its help documentation says the servers run on Amazon Web Services in the USA. The privacy policy also names Amazon RDS and S3, Google Cloud SQL and Cloud Storage, and Firebase, without stating regions, and describes that data may go to countries without an adequacy decision, with standard contractual clauses as a safeguard. A European organisation should assume that data is likely processed in the US.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Piktochart

Piktochart is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Piktochart hosts data outside the EU (US). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Piktochart is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Piktochart together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
