Quickwit: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Quickwit is an open-source search engine for log and trace data. It runs queries directly on object storage and supports OpenTelemetry and Jaeger for ingesting telemetry. The software is developed by Quickwit, Inc., which was founded in 2020 and acquired by Datadog in January 2025. Datadog has said that the Quickwit team will focus on integration with Datadog and that it will release a major update under the Apache 2.0 licence.

According to CB Insights, Quickwit is headquartered in San Francisco, California; the company's own website does not state a location. Quickwit can be deployed on premises, in the customer's own cloud or on Kubernetes, so logs remain under the operator's control. The sources reviewed do not describe a vendor-hosted service. For a European organisation, Quickwit is therefore a self-operated option in which storage can take place in its own EU infrastructure, while the ownership link to Datadog should be considered in contracts and in support access.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Quickwit

Quickwit is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Quickwit hosts data outside the EU (US). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Quickwit is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Quickwit together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
