SmokePing is a tool for measuring, storing and displaying latency, latency distribution and packet loss. A daemon runs measurements using a range of probes, from simple ping to web requests and custom protocols, and RRDtool stores the data and draws the graphs. An alarm system reacts to configurable latency patterns, and the web interface offers graph zooming and multi-target graphs. In a master/slave setup, several measurement points test the same target in parallel. SmokePing is written in Perl and you run it yourself on a Unix-like system.

Because it is self-hosted, measurement data stays on your own infrastructure and no vendor service or foreign parent company is involved. You decide where the data is stored and who can access it. For European organisations it is a building block for keeping network monitoring under their own control.
