syslog-ng is an open-source log collection and routing daemon. Its primary author, Balázs Scheidler, began the project in 1998. It collects logs from servers, applications and network devices and forwards them to storage or analysis systems. The Open Source Edition is licensed under LGPL and GPLv2, while the Premium Edition adds plugins under a proprietary licence. Balabit, the original commercial sponsor, was acquired by One Identity in 2018, and the software is developed in One Identity's Budapest office.
One Identity LLC publishes the commercial edition and is headquartered in Aliso Viejo, California, which places the commercial owner under US jurisdiction. The open-source project also has a community of volunteers and a separate fork, AxoSyslog, which the original author launched in May 2024, so the licensing and governance of syslog-ng do not rest with a single company. Because the software runs on the organisation's own systems, log data stays under its control. For European organisations the Open Source Edition is a self-hosted option, while support and the Premium Edition come from a US-headquartered company.
