Temporal is a durable execution platform for building applications. Developers write Workflows in a language they already use through native SDKs; Temporal records the state at each step so that a Workflow resumes after failures without losing progress. Activities wrap failure-prone work such as API calls and are retried automatically, and the service provides task queues, signals, timers and visibility into each Workflow execution. Temporal originated as a fork of Uber's Cadence. It is available as an open-source service that you run yourself and as Temporal Cloud, where Temporal hosts the service for you.
The open-source core is licensed under the MIT licence. Temporal Technologies is based in Seattle, United States, so US jurisdiction, including the CLOUD Act, applies to the vendor. Temporal Cloud is offered in several regions, including AWS in Frankfurt, Ireland and London and Google Cloud in Frankfurt, which allows European data placement. The vendor states that it never sees your code under either option. Self-hosting the open-source service keeps operation entirely under your control.
