Thanos: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Thanos is an open-source project that extends Prometheus with high availability and long-term storage. It provides a global query view across multiple Prometheus servers and clusters and keeps historical metrics in object storage such as Amazon S3, Google Cloud Storage or Azure. Older data can be downsampled so that queries over long time ranges stay fast. Tools that support the Prometheus query API, such as Grafana, work with it. Thanos consists of components such as Sidecar, Query, Store and Receive, which you run yourself, for instance as containers on Kubernetes. The project itself does not offer a hosted service.

Thanos is licensed under the Apache License 2.0 and is an incubating project of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation. It is developed in the open on GitHub, and no single vendor processes your data. Because you operate Thanos yourself, you choose which object storage and which region to use. A European organisation can therefore keep its metrics inside the EU or in its own data centres, provided the chosen storage service is itself European.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Thanos

Thanos is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Thanos scores best on data residency.

Thanos is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Thanos together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
