UptimeRobot: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

UptimeRobot is an uptime-monitoring service that checks websites, APIs and other endpoints and alerts you when something goes down, slows down or changes. It offers HTTP(S), keyword, ping and port checks, cron-job and heartbeat monitoring, and monitoring of SSL certificates and domain expiry. Alerts are sent by email, SMS, voice call, app push and integrations such as Slack, Teams and PagerDuty. UptimeRobot also provides public status pages with custom domains and maintenance windows. The service is delivered as SaaS and is not open source.

UptimeRobot is operated by UptimeRobot s. r. o. in Bratislava, Slovakia, and is part of the itrinity portfolio. According to its privacy policy, the monitoring infrastructure and status pages run at Hetzner, while Amazon Web Services, DigitalOcean, Limestone Networks, Cloudflare, Vercel and other providers are used for checks, storage, DNS and the dashboard. Data may also be processed outside the EEA, with appropriate safeguards. A European organisation should therefore check which data goes to which sub-processor.

Why digital sovereignty matters with UptimeRobot

UptimeRobot is headquartered in SK and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so UptimeRobot scores best on data residency.

UptimeRobot is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs UptimeRobot together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
