UserTesting: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

UserTesting is a research platform that teams use to gather feedback on websites, apps, prototypes and concepts. Organisations ask participants to complete tasks, review the recorded sessions and use AI-assisted analysis to summarise findings. It is delivered as software as a service. The product combines the former UserTesting and UserZoom businesses, which merged in 2023 under the UserTesting name.

The company is headquartered in the United States and owned by the US investment firm Thoma Bravo, so it falls under US jurisdiction, including the CLOUD Act. According to UserTesting's help centre, customers choose a region (EU, US or Asia-Pacific) for session data such as video, audio and transcripts when an account is created, while other data such as reports and test plans is stored in the US. Choosing a region does not rule out processing outside it. A data processing agreement based on the EU Standard Contractual Clauses is available, and the company is certified under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework. European organisations should check which data stays in the chosen region.

Why digital sovereignty matters with UserTesting

UserTesting is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

UserTesting hosts data in US, EU, OTHER. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

UserTesting is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs UserTesting together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
