Voltron Data is a company built around Apache Arrow, the open columnar data format. Its product Theseus is a distributed, GPU-native SQL query engine for analytical workloads on datasets in the multi-terabyte range. Theseus reads data directly from files and open formats instead of ingesting it into a store of its own, and uses Arrow as its in-memory format, so it works with tools such as Ibis, RAPIDS and Substrait. It is software that organisations run on their own GPU hardware, on premises or in the cloud. The company also supports the open-source Arrow ecosystem.
Voltron Data is a venture-backed company headquartered in the United States and is therefore subject to US law. Theseus itself is commercial software rather than open source, although it builds on open standards. Because the engine runs on infrastructure you choose, your organisation decides where the data resides. The vendor nevertheless remains a US company, which European organisations should weigh when assessing licensing and support.
