XenServer is a virtualisation platform (hypervisor) installed on an organisation's own servers that runs virtual machines across a pool of hardware. The current release is XenServer 9. According to press coverage of XenServer 8, features include live migration of virtual machines, dynamic memory control, GPU virtualisation, virtual TPMs and a migration tool from VMware; management is done with XenCenter. The product was previously called Citrix Hypervisor and is offered through Citrix subscriptions and separate editions licensed per socket.
XenServer is owned by Cloud Software Group, the US company formed in 2022 from the merger of Citrix and TIBCO, headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and privately held by Vista Equity Partners and Evergreen Coast Capital. Because the software runs on the customer's own infrastructure, the customer decides where data resides; the vendor itself is subject to US jurisdiction, including the CLOUD Act. The product itself is not open source. European organisations looking to change supplier can consider European or open-source virtualisation.
