Zettlr: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Zettlr is a free, open-source writing application for Windows, macOS and Linux, built for academic writing and for managing notes in Markdown. It supports the whole writing process, from rough notes to a journal article or book manuscript. Features include citations through Zotero, JabRef and Juris-M, export via Pandoc (including to LaTeX), rendering of LaTeX maths and Mermaid diagrams, LanguageTool integration, custom CSS and Zettelkasten tools such as note IDs, wiki-style links and a graph view.

Zettlr is a desktop program: your files stay on your own computer, with no forced cloud sync and no telemetry. The app connects to the internet only to check for updates, and you can turn that off. The software is licensed under the GNU GPL v3; the name and icons are excluded from the licence. According to the website, developer Hendrik Erz works between Sweden and Germany. No parent company is known. Because data stays local, you decide where it is stored.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Zettlr

Zettlr is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Zettlr scores best on data residency.

Zettlr is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Zettlr together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
