Activiti: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Activiti is a lightweight, Java-centric workflow and business process management engine built around the BPMN 2 standard. Developers embed it in Java applications, with Spring integration, to model, run and monitor business processes. Activiti Cloud adds cloud-native building blocks for distributed systems, aimed at containerised deployments on Docker and Kubernetes. Activiti is an engine that you run yourself; it is not a hosted service.

The project is open source under the Apache License 2.0. It started in 2010 with sponsorship from Alfresco, whose commercial Process Services product is based on it, and the Activiti website carries Alfresco Software branding. Hyland, a company based in Ohio, acquired Alfresco in 2020. Because you operate Activiti on your own infrastructure, you decide where data is stored. European organisations should still weigh the US ownership of the sponsor and check how actively the project is maintained before relying on it.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Activiti

Activiti is headquartered in GB, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor. The ultimate owner is based in US. Foreign control undermines part of the certainty a European headquarters offers.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Activiti scores best on data residency.

Activiti is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Activiti together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
