Apple Notes: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Apple Notes is the note-taking app included with Apple devices, showing the same notes on Mac, iPhone and iPad through iCloud. Users create notes with formatting, lists and tables, add photos, videos, PDFs and other attachments, draw with the Markup palette, record audio with a searchable transcript and have calculations solved inline. Notes can be organised with folders, smart folders, tags and pinning, locked with a password and shared with others. The app is part of the Apple ecosystem and is not used separately from the devices or iCloud.

Apple is a US company headquartered in Cupertino, California. By default, notes in iCloud are encrypted in transit and on the server, with Apple holding the keys. With the optional Advanced Data Protection feature, notes are end-to-end encrypted and only your trusted devices hold the keys; some metadata, such as creation and modification dates, remains under standard protection. The software is not open source and cannot be self-hosted.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Apple Notes

Apple Notes is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Apple Notes hosts data outside the EU (US). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Apple Notes is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Apple Notes together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
