Atlan: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Atlan is a metadata and governance platform for data and AI teams. It brings together metadata from more than eighty connectors (data warehouses, BI tools, business applications) in a single data graph, uses AI to draft descriptions and term links, lets people certify definitions, and serves that certified context to AI agents and tools through an MCP server, SQL, APIs and an SDK. Atlan is a cloud-first, single-tenant SaaS service: each customer gets dedicated compute and storage on AWS, Azure or Google Cloud, in a selected cloud region.

Atlan is not a European company. Company directories list Singapore as its headquarters, while other profiles give San Francisco, so US jurisdiction (CLOUD Act) may come into play. The software is not open source. According to the documentation, source data stays in the customer's own systems; Atlan stores metadata in a dedicated storage bucket per customer. The documentation does not name European tenant regions, so it is worth confirming with the vendor whether hosting in the EU is available.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Atlan

Atlan is headquartered in SG, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Atlan hosts data outside the EU (US). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Atlan is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Atlan together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
