Azure Monitor is Microsoft's cloud service for collecting, analysing and acting on monitoring data from Azure, from on-premises systems and from other clouds. It gathers platform metrics and activity logs automatically and can ingest application, container, database and network telemetry. Users query logs with Kusto Query Language, visualise data in Azure Workbooks or Azure Managed Grafana, and configure alerts and autoscaling. It is delivered only as a cloud service; Microsoft states that there is no on-premises version.
Microsoft Corporation is headquartered in Redmond, Washington, so the provider is subject to US jurisdiction, including the CLOUD Act. Microsoft states that most Azure services let customers specify the region where data is stored and processed, and that data stays within the chosen geography. Europe is one such geography, with several regions in the EU and the EEA. Customer data may be copied between regions within a geography for redundancy. European organisations that need monitoring with no US parent exposure should weigh the region choice against this legal position.
