Contentful: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Contentful is an API-first content platform (headless CMS) that organisations use to model, manage and deliver structured content to websites, apps and other channels through APIs. Editors work in a web application, developers retrieve content through APIs. The service is delivered as software as a service and, according to its documentation, delivers content worldwide through networks such as Fastly and Amazon CloudFront. Salesforce plans to integrate the platform into Customer 360 and Agentforce.

Contentful was founded in Berlin in 2013. Salesforce, a US company, completed its acquisition on 1 September 2026, so Contentful has a US parent, which can make US legislation such as the CLOUD Act relevant. Data is stored in the US by default. Contentful offers EU data residency as an option, on Premium plans only: content and user profiles are then stored in AWS Ireland, with backups in AWS Frankfurt. Contentful itself states it cannot guarantee that data stored in the EU is only processed in or accessed from the EU.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Contentful

Contentful is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Contentful hosts data in US, EU. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Contentful is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Contentful together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
