Gefyra: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Gefyra is an open-source tool for local application development with Kubernetes, developed by Blueshoe GmbH. It builds a network bridge between a developer's local machine and a Kubernetes cluster. Containers run locally while using the cluster's resources, and traffic to selected services can be redirected to the local environment. This removes the build-and-push cycle for every change. According to the vendor, Gefyra works with any Kubernetes cluster, supports debugging from the IDE and needs no changes to existing manifests. It is also available as a Docker Desktop extension, and Blueshoe offers enterprise support.

Blueshoe GmbH is based in Gräfelfing, Germany, and no foreign parent company is named. The source code is in the project's public repository under the Apache 2.0 licence. Gefyra is a tool you install and use with your own clusters; no separate cloud service from the vendor is described. Which data ends up where therefore depends on the cluster and infrastructure you choose yourself, which makes a European set-up straightforward to achieve.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Gefyra

Gefyra is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Gefyra scores best on data residency.

Gefyra is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Gefyra together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
