Heptapod: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Heptapod is a software forge that adds Mercurial support to GitLab, so teams working with Mercurial repositories can use merge requests, issues, project management and continuous integration. The software is free and open source and is offered in two ways: as the hosted service Heptapod Cloud, or as a self-managed installation on the organisation's own infrastructure. The project was originally created by Octobus, and since March 2024 it has been maintained by CloudCrane under the Orbeet trademark.

CloudCrane, whose registered office the Orbeet legal notice places in Paris, maintains the product from France. The hosted service runs on Clever Cloud infrastructure; Heptapod describes Clever Cloud as a French provider with data centres in Europe, and Clever Cloud publishes a GDPR statement and a data processing agreement. A self-managed installation keeps repositories on servers the organisation controls, while the hosted option keeps processing within a French and European supply chain. Organisations should still confirm the hosting location of their own instance.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Heptapod

Heptapod is headquartered in FR and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Heptapod scores best on data residency.

Heptapod is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Heptapod together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
