GlitchTip: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

GlitchTip is an open-source error-tracking tool, designed to be simpler to operate than alternatives while staying compatible with Sentry's client SDKs. It tracks exceptions, log messages and Content Security Policy violations, and adds performance monitoring of slow web requests and database calls, uptime monitoring with alerts by email or webhook, and log search and filtering. You can sign up for the hosted version or run GlitchTip on your own server by following its installation documentation.

The hosted service is run by Burke Software and Consulting, which acts as a data processor. It operates two fully separate instances: an EU instance on DigitalOcean in Frankfurt, Germany, and a US instance on DigitalOcean in New York, with no replication between them. The backend is published under the MIT licence, so organisations that want full control over jurisdiction and data location can self-host it on infrastructure of their choice.

Why digital sovereignty matters with GlitchTip

GlitchTip is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

GlitchTip hosts data in EU, US. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

GlitchTip is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs GlitchTip together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
