Knowledge Catalog, formerly Dataplex Universal Catalog (Dataplex), is a Google Cloud service that brings together technical metadata and business context across structured and unstructured data. It discovers and indexes metadata from sources such as BigQuery, AlloyDB and Spanner without moving the underlying data. It offers glossaries and review workflows for governance, rule-based data quality checks and scans, profiling, column-level lineage and natural-language search, and MCP servers and a context API let AI agents use the same metadata. The service is delivered through Google Cloud; Google states the rename took effect on 10 April 2026, with API, client library, CLI and IAM names unchanged.
The service is operated by Google, a US company, and European organisations typically weigh US legislation such as the CLOUD Act when using US-headquartered providers. Google lists European locations for Knowledge Catalog, including the eu multi-region and regions such as Belgium, Finland, Frankfurt, the Netherlands, Paris and Warsaw, so data location can be set in Europe. It is a closed Google Cloud service, not open-source software.
