Haiku: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Haiku is a free and open-source operating system for personal computers, under constant development. Its goal is a system that is fast, efficient and easy to use, and it is built by a worldwide community of volunteers. The system mounts activated packages over a read-only system directory, so that installed software is layered on top of a fixed base.

Development is carried out by volunteers together with Haiku, Inc., a non-profit organisation founded in Rochester, New York, in the United States to support development financially. The system is released under the MIT licence and the Be Sample Code License. For a European organisation Haiku is a transparent open-source system under US legal jurisdiction that runs on the organisation's own computers. Production use calls for an independent assessment of the software available for it and of the support the community can provide.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Haiku

Haiku is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Haiku hosts data outside the EU (US). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Haiku is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Haiku together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
