Honeycomb is an observability platform for engineering teams that need to understand how their software behaves in production. It covers distributed tracing, log analytics, metrics, service level objectives, frontend observability and a telemetry pipeline, and it describes itself as OpenTelemetry-native. Features such as BubbleUp support root-cause analysis, and newer tooling addresses AI agent and LLM workloads. Honeycomb is delivered as a hosted service, with a Private Cloud deployment also offered. It is not open source.
Honeycomb is operated by Hound Technology, Inc., a US company. Customers can keep data in the US (AWS us-east-1) or, since an EU instance was introduced in 2024, in a separate EU instance (AWS eu-west-1, Ireland). The vendor states that the EU instance complies with the EU-US Data Privacy Framework. Because the provider is American, US jurisdiction, including the CLOUD Act, can still apply to the vendor even when data sits in the EU. European organisations should weigh this when choosing a region; the OpenTelemetry basis eases switching providers.
