Immich is a self-hosted application for managing and backing up photos and videos, often used as an alternative to Google Photos. You run the server yourself, according to the documentation with Docker Compose, and use a web app or mobile apps for Android and iOS. Mobile devices can back up selected albums to the server automatically. Immich also offers albums and sharing, facial recognition, search by metadata and objects, a map and multiple users.
Immich is open source under the GNU AGPL v3 licence, and its source code is on GitHub. Because the server runs on a machine you control, you decide where your media is stored, including within the EU, and you do not depend on a hosted cloud service. The core Immich team joined FUTO in 2024, which supports the project. You must back up the files yourself: the built-in database backup holds only metadata and user information.
