Jump Desktop: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Jump Desktop is a platform for remote access to computers. Its apps support the RDP and VNC protocols as well as the vendor's own Fluid protocol, and are available for Windows, Mac, iPhone and iPad, Android (beta), Linux (alpha) and the web browser. With Fluid you can also connect by hostname or IP address, even on networks with no internet access. The software is installed on your own devices; for connections over the internet and for team management the service uses a cloud account.

Jump Desktop is a product of Phase Five Systems, which according to the App Store lists its seller address in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. According to the vendor, connections are end-to-end encrypted and relay servers cannot decrypt their contents. Team data such as computers, connection logs and user lists is stored encrypted in the cloud; the privacy policy names Amazon Web Services as the hosting provider without stating a region. Organisations should therefore ask where account data is stored.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Jump Desktop

Jump Desktop is headquartered in AE, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Jump Desktop runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

Jump Desktop is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Jump Desktop together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
