Kik is a messaging app for text, photos and videos in private and public chats. According to its terms of service, Kik does not store message content on its servers, but it does keep information such as group membership and who a user has interacted with. The app also sends log information to the provider's servers.
Kik is owned and operated by MediaLab.AI Inc., a US company that acquired the app in 2019; the terms are governed by California law and disputes are handled in Los Angeles. The terms do not mention the GDPR or a hosting region. In September 2026 the Connecticut Attorney General announced an investigation into MediaLab's age assurance and content moderation. For a European organisation this means that metadata about users falls under US jurisdiction, including the CLOUD Act, and that no data processing agreement or EU hosting option is documented.
