Netdata: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Netdata is an open-source platform for real-time infrastructure monitoring. The Netdata Agent collects metrics every second, automatically discovers what runs on a system, flags anomalies using machine learning, and offers alerting and export to tools such as Prometheus and InfluxDB. It runs on Linux, FreeBSD, macOS and Windows, including containers and Kubernetes. Optionally there is Netdata Cloud, a commercial layer providing remote access, SSO, role-based access control and dashboards across multiple systems.

The Agent is open source under GPLv3 or later and runs on your own servers, where the metrics are also stored; according to the project, Netdata Cloud does not centralise metric storage. The default web interface and Netdata Cloud itself are closed source. For those wanting full control, Netdata Cloud On-Premises is also available, including for air-gapped environments. For a European organisation, self-hosting the Agent, optionally with its own Parent node to aggregate data, is the route that keeps monitoring data on its own infrastructure.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Netdata

Netdata is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Netdata hosts data outside the EU (US). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Netdata is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Netdata together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
