Observium: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Observium is a network monitoring and management platform. It automatically discovers devices and services, collects performance metrics and raises alerts through a web interface that shows real-time and historical data. According to its website it supports hundreds of operating systems, including Cisco, Linux, Windows and Juniper, maps networks using protocols such as CDP and LLDP, and offers a REST API. Observium is installed on a server you run yourself. A free Community edition is available alongside paid Professional and Enterprise editions.

Observium Limited is registered in the Isle of Man. The Community edition is open source under the QPL licence and is released twice a year as a tarball; the paid editions receive updates through SVN. Because you run the software yourself, the monitoring data about your network stays on your own infrastructure, in a data centre of your choosing. For a European organisation, the licence terms and a vendor based outside the EU are the main points to weigh.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Observium

Observium is headquartered in GB, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Observium scores best on data residency.

Observium is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Observium together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
