OpenMetadata is an open-source metadata platform that brings technical metadata, data quality, lineage (including column level), ownership, policies, glossaries, classifications and data contracts together in a single knowledge graph. It offers more than 130 connectors, APIs, SDKs and webhooks, supports standards such as OpenLineage and ODCS, and includes an MCP server that lets AI assistants query and update metadata. You can host it yourself, for example with Docker or Kubernetes, or use it as a managed cloud service from Collate.
OpenMetadata was created by Collate, which also holds its trademarks; the project is licensed under Apache 2.0. Collate is a US company based in Menlo Park, California. If you self-host, your metadata stays in your own environment and you choose its location. No hosting regions for Collate's managed service are published where we could find them, so ask before you commit. A European organisation can run the open code itself while still depending on a US supplier for the project's development.
