oVirt is an open-source virtualization management platform built around the KVM hypervisor. Organisations use it to manage hosts, virtual machines, storage and networking from one web interface; the project lists KVM, OVN networking, high availability and Ansible automation. oVirt is self-hosted: you install the oVirt Engine, a Java application, and attach hypervisor hosts in your own environment.
oVirt is a community project without a company owner. Red Hat became its main contributor after the other original board members resigned; development moved to GitHub and outside contributors are welcome. Red Hat Virtualization, the commercial product based on oVirt, was scheduled to reach end of life in August 2026, with OpenShift Virtualization as its successor. Because oVirt runs entirely on your own infrastructure, no data flows to a vendor service. You do depend on community support and on a small group of contributors that includes Red Hat, so for a European organisation the question is mainly operating capacity and continuity, not data location.
